UAE lifesavers making an impact on and off the beach

Creating unique opportunities for youth on and beyond the beach is at the core of the United Arab Emirates’ Pirates Surf Rescue program.

Isaac Hadri who competed with teammates in the men’s Youth Beach Relay, is the Pirates Surf Rescue boy vice-captain.

Pirates Surf Rescue is a unique program that combines sea rescue and a fitness lifestyle program aimed at members aged 5-20 years old. Based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the program has more than 1200 registered members and over 50 coaches.

Originally from the UK, Isaac joined Pirates when he was just four-years-old and is proud to be representing the club on the international stage as part of their youth team.

“I am so excited to be here, this is my first time to Australia – it is amazing, I love this country and being part of this competition is a dream come true,” he said.

Through the Pirates program children and youth participate in diverse beach-based activities that extend beyond lifesaving with the program including kayaking, surfing, swimming, volleyball, lifeguard training and even jetskiing.

Like most lifesaving organisations, the program has strong connections with their community, so much so that youth members have taken part in contributing to causes like visiting orphanages and constructing schools.

As part of the Pirates Surf Rescue youth team Isaac is competing in sprints, flags, relays and the 2km run as well as board and swim events.

“Since I have been here, I have made lots of connections with other competitors, everyone is super nice and super welcoming,” said Isaac.

“I already can’t wait to take part in the World Titles again in two years time – and maybe by then we will be strong enough to take home some wins.”
